The South Asian gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community in Sydney (and Australia) is a minority within a minority. And Trikone Australasia is here to help.
Founded in 2008, Trikone Australasia is affiliated with San Francisco-based Trikone and follows itsmission to offer a supportive, empowering and non-judgmental environment, where GLBT South Asians can meet, make connections, bond together and proudly promote awareness and acceptance of their sexuality in society.
South Asians affiliated with Trikone Australasia trace their ethnicities to one of the following places: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Fiji, India, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Tibet.
Trikone Australasia actively works against all forms of oppression based on race, gender, religion, class, sexual orientation and other identities. Through our website, cultural nights, film festivals, Bollywood dances parties and Mardi Gras celebrations, Trikone Australasia works to nurture and empower the South Asian GLBT community in Sydney and Australia.
OUR MISSION
We invite and welcome members of South Asian GLBT community to join us in our mission, which is:
- To bring people of South Asian heritage together
- To promote awareness, visibility and cultural and legal acceptance of people with alternative sexual orientations and gender identities
- To help people proudly affirm both their South Asian identity as well as their sexual orientation
- To work with other social and political action organisations, within Australia and in countries of our origin, to remove all forms of discrimination
